What about Sugar?


All sugars in our Shrubs are 100% naturally occurring sugars in the fruit and honey (for our original range) or Agave nectar (for our Vegan range) used in our individual recipes!

We believe that raw sweeteners created naturally by nature, such as honey, have medicinal properties and you won’t find any processed sugars or artificial sweeteners in our Shrubs. Not even the so called “natural” ones like Stevia.

For this reason, our Shrubs will never be sugar free but they will always be 100% processed sugar free!

And if you are still not convinced there is approximately 1 teaspoon of honey (for our Original range) or 5 mL of Agave nectar (for our Vegan range) per serve.

Our Shrubs are NOT made from “natural” concentrates to enhance the flavour. It truly is the real deal which means the flavour will vary slightly depending on the goodness of the season, nature and the farmer.

Our Shrubs are NOT packed with “natural” sweeteners to make them sweeter but sugar free.

Our Shrubs are NOT pasteurised, High Pressure treated or treated in any way to extend the shelf life or make them shelf stable.

We do get this one a lot so we won’t hold it against you but to set the record straight,

Shrub is NOT Kombucha!

The only thing they may have in common is that they are fermented drinks.

Shrubs are made with vinegar and Kombucha is made by fermenting tea.

We are not discrediting either or as they can work wonders together in your digestive system.

Unlike Kombucha, however, our Shrubs are Caffeine Free making them suitable for the entire family.

And we think our Shrubs also taste better. (We may be a bit biased here :)! )


Are all Shrubs the same? What are Naturally Cheeky Shrubs good for?

Not all Shrubs on the market are the same.

Our Shrubs are made from Organic Apple cider vinegar and are cold-pressed using Hydropress.

They carry the same benefits as ACV does all by itself but are multiplied by the benefits of the other ingredients contained in individual recipes.

Our followers primarily use our Shrubs to improve their gut health but we don’t make any claims. Our testimonials speak for themselves.

What is a Shrub?

Where did the word “SHRUB” come from?

Unless you’ve come across these concoctions before the moment you hear or read the word Shrub, tasty and refreshing drink is probably the last thing on your mind. But, it is a drink. And you’ll be amazed by its history when you realise that people have enjoyed versions of these concoctions the world over—from colonial America, where sailors used them to prevent scurvy, to modern Asia, where people sip drinking vinegars as a health tonic to this day.

If you search for the meaning of the word “shrub”  in relation to a beverage rather than the bushy plant in your backyard, you will discover it is also seen as a metathetic variant for the Arabic word sharab, meaning “drink” or “to drink”.

We delved into the history of vinegar concoctions used all over the world. Coming across other vinegar drink varieties such as Switchels which, as the Wikipedia says, is also known as the “Haymaker’s Punch”, a drink made of water mixed with vinegar that was often seasoned with ginger debatably originating in the Caribbean. Haymakers Punch became a popular summer drink in the American Colonies in the late 17th century and by the 19th century, it had become a traditional drink to serve to thirsty farmers at hay harvest time, hence the nickname.


The early English version of Shrubs arose from medicinal cordials of the 15th century as well as one of the oldest Iranian drinks dating back to the ancient times that was made of a combination of vinegar (serkeh) and “angabin,” which refers to honey. The drink itself is called Sekanjabin which is still served in certain places as a refreshing drink usually during the summer season.


The American version of Shrubs has its origins in 17th century England where vinegar was used as an alternative to citrus juices in the preservation of berries and other fruits for the off-season. Fruit preserves made in this fashion were themselves known as Shrubs and the practice carried over to colonial America. By the 19th century, typical American recipe for Shrub used vinegar poured over fruit—traditionally berries—which was left to infuse anywhere from overnight up to several days; afterwards, the fruit would be strained out and the remaining liquid would be mixed with a sweetener such as sugar or honey and then reduced to make a syrup. The sweet-and-sour syrup could then be mixed with either water or soda water and served as a soft drink, or it could be used as a mixer in alcoholic cocktails.

How many servings is in one 500 mL bottle?

One 500 mL bottle has 7 serves.

This means if you take the recommended 70 mL once a day 1 bottle will last you 1 week if you are a single user.

There is no set recommended maximum of servings per day but we highly encourage you to ask your nutritionist, naturopath or doctor, if you need some advice. Like with anything, we are all unique so listen to your body. It tells you what you need.

Can I drink my Shrub straight or do I have to dilute it?

We say yes to straight if you can handle it but we always recommend diluting your Shrub.

The typical ratio we found works best for a lot of you is 1 part Shrub to 2 part water or sparkling mineral water. But it truly comes down to your taste buds. Some prefer it quick and take it as is as a shot chased down with a glass of water and some love to take a little time sipping away on a refreshing drink.

Do I need to keep my Shrub refrigerated?

The short answer is YES!

Our Shrubs are raw and unpasteurised and in order for the liveliness inside to remain calm and steady, they need to stay in the fridge. That applies to opened and unopened bottles! If you don’t store them properly they may fizz up overtime and like with various varieties of unnamed soda waters could lead to some embarrassing situations when you least expect it. We do recommend to mix the content well before cracking the lid but always check and open carefully.


How long will my Shrub last?

Our Shrubs have 3 months shelf life from the day they are manufactured. If you are worried your Shrub will run out of date at any stage you can always freeze it and then defrost it at a later date. Please make sure there is enough room in the bottle before freezing it to leave enough empty space in the bottle for the expansion of the contained liquid. We highly recommend for you to defrost your Shrub by placing in a refrigerator which takes 24 + hours. We don’t expect any issues or delays at this stage but slight changes may occur if we get overwhelmed with orders. In that case, you will be the first to know about any delays.

Being based in the NT we found that refrigerated transport can be unreliable and super costly. We knew we had to think outside the box when looking for a reliable, cost-effective and somewhat sustainable way to ship Australia wide without a worry. How long does it take for my Shrubs to be dispatched?

The Time Chase

Unfortunately, Australia Post can’t guarantee overnight delivery from the Northern Territory.
Our WoolCool box can keep your Shrub cool for 72 hours. This means we have to make sure your order will be delivered to you within the 72-hour time frame.
To achieve that, we will drop your order off at the post office on a specific day during the week in the afternoon. Your order will then be processed by AU Post and put on the next flight out of Darwin the following morning. (AU Post is not open on public holidays!)
All things going exactly as planned should give enough time for your Shrub to get to your location (within 24 hours) as well as leave enough time for the mailman to either drop it off or for you to collect it.

Why do I have to sign on delivery?

The primary concern is heat. We want to ensure your order is not left in a direct sun as it will make the ice pack in the box melt faster. Having you sign for it will:

1. hopefully, keep your order in an ambient temperature for longer and

2. ensure the product is kept safe until you get it.
